Women's Sweep Programs

IMG_4807.jpg (edited)

The women of PBC's sweep programs are recent college grads who want to continue rowing competitively, experienced oarswomen looking to get back into the swing of things, and national team alums, including World Championship and Olympic medalists. We span generations and stages in life. We are students and professionals and retirees, parents and grandparents, and more. What we have in common is a passion for rowing fast and the hard work it takes to do that. We’re a scrappy bunch that produces results.

PBC Women’s Sweep Program first made it's debut in the 1970's, when women's rowing made it's debut on the international scene, and has been producing results at local, national, and international regattas ever since. 2022 is a rebuilding year, after the disruption of the pandemic. We are looking for talent for both our Open Women Sweep program and our Senior Masters Women's Sweep program.

Open Women's Sweep Program

The mission of this team is to select the fastest crews to represent PBC at the most competitive local, national, and potentially international regattas prioritized by our coaches. Workouts will be intense and selection for travel teams will be based on seat racing, erg scores, and coaches discretion. We compete annually in national and international races, with a special emphasis on Club Nationals, Head of the Charles, Head of the Schuylkill, and San Diego Crew Classic.

If you are interested in trying out for Open Women Sweep:

Please send us an email at womensweep@potomacboatclub.org with the following information:

  •  A brief summary of your rowing experience
  •  Age/Height
  •  Erg score (2k and/or 6k)
  •  Personal goals
  •  Referrals from former coach/captain/teammates welcome

We look forward to hearing from you!

Senior Masters Women's Sweep Program

Potomac Boat Club Senior Masters Women’s Sweep (SMWS) is a competitive team of 40+ year-old experienced rowers. The team mission is to train hard and send the fastest age 40+ crews to competitive local, national and occasionally international regattas. This is not a learn-to-row program, nor is it ideal for those who haven’t rowed or competed since high school or college. Recent race experience and race-ready fitness will be helpful to prospective team members.

Racing team selections will be based on seat racing, erg scores, and coach’s discretion. We are on the water from mid-March through mid-November, followed by a post-Thanksgiving winter program featuring ergs, stairs, weights and calisthenics through early March.

If you are interested in joining the Senior Masters Women's Sweep Team, please send an email with the following information to Juanita Rilling, jrilling@verizon.net  and Kathleen Pons Haines kponshaines@gmail.com

  • A brief summary of your rowing experience
  • Age/Height/open weight or light weight
  • Erg score (2k and/or 5k), with a photo of the C2 monitor in the memory function with your final time and split data
  • A brief statement of personal rowing-related goals
  • Referrals from former coaches/captains/teammates are welcome but not required

We welcome the opportunity to row together!
