My name is Barb Ryan and I am standing for election to the Board of Governors of the Potomac Boat Club. I have been a Senior member of PBC since 2008, I previously chaired the Membership Committee from 2014-2016, and since 2013 have been the person responsible for the porch and patio flowers. I am also serving on the PBC Strategic Planning Group.

I love PBC and the community and sports it represents. I am primarily a single, independent sculler and I also like to row with the PBC Sculling Program.  I can be seen on the dock most mornings when the river isn’t flooded and it isn’t too cold.

My family has been involved with rowing for many, many years. As a teenager I used to get dragged to my brother’s regattas at Penn. I went to Georgetown before women actually got to row, but took up the sport later in life. Both of my daughters rowed at McLean High School and my older daughter, Meghan Wheeler, was co-captain of the women’s openweight crew at Princeton and is now a member of the USRowing Senior National Team, training in Princeton NJ.

As you can see, I represent many rowing interest groups – not just one. My goals in serving on the PBC Board are to contribute to sound governance and oversight of this club’s incredible legacy and potential. I am deeply interested in the future of PBC and willing to delve into the operational details that the Board must focus on.

I recently retired from my full time private/public sector career – most recently as Chief Operating Officer and Chief of Staff of the FDIC — and now have the time and flexibility to make this commitment. I intend to remain in the area for the indefinite future so can commit to attending the Board meetings. I promise to be actively involved in all significant decisions that come to the PBC Board and to be available to hear concerns and suggestions of PBC members.

I hope you will vote for me.

Thank you!

Barb
