Key Bridge Repairs

Take note of the barges that sit across the first and second arch in the photo.  We will need to prepare for similar situations….

By the end of this week, DDOT will begin staging equipment for the planned repairs to Key Bridge.  It is a 24-month project that will involve barges in the river/arches during the process.  Throughout the repairs, typically one and sometimes two arches will be obstructed.

A DDOT representative gave an update/overview at a meeting last week of the Potomac River Access Coalition.  DDOT is clearly aware of the navigation hazards involved with the project, and appears to be coordinating closely with Harbor Patrol and the U.S. Coast Guard.  It will be incumbent on the rowing community to ensure our unique needs are addressed.  We have POC’s for the project, there will be a public meeting in the next week or two, and apparently there will also be […]

Reminder about Rowing by TBC

A few years ago, we sat down with the Potomac River Safey Committee, TBC’s management and representatives of some of PBC and agreed upon one thing: Don’t complete any speedwork on the DC side of the TBC bend.  In a nutshell, don’t go blazing by their dock.

In the summer we have a lot of novices trying out singles from TBC.  As much as they are told the rules of the river, we have to treat those rowers like the weekend paddleboarders and kayakers: they aren’t remembering traffic rules.  It does not make it okay but to keep ourselves safe, we agreed that we go around that bend with caution.

This is a time to remind since the singles are still out there and the college programs are starting back up.  It isn’t worth the injury to the boats and the rowers.

Many thanks,

Lena

Mark your calendar… August 15th Send Off Celebration!

PBC!

Please join the PBC Race Committee for a happy hour to celebrate and send off our Women’s Lightweight 4x to Rotterdam for the 2016 World Championships! The crew composite consists of Emily Schmieg (PBC), Morgan McGovern (PBC), Ashley Amos (Riverside), and Monica Whitehouse (Sarasota) coached by Reilly Dampeer and Matt Madigan.

If you want to follow their progress, please check out their blog!  In fact, they just met their funding goal. https://usalw4x.wordpress.com/fundraising-information

SHOP registration is now open!

The 36th annual Charlie Butt Scullers’ Head of the Potomac Regatta will take place on Sunday, September 25, and registration is now open here!

Please mark your calendars and be on the lookout for an email asking for volunteer support. We could not run the regatta without the assistance of so many club members (and family members and friends), and we hope we can count on your support again this year.

Further details will be posted on the Ronin site and on the SHOP page on the PBC site.

If you have any questions, please contact me or any of the excellent SHOP committee members: Peter Clements, Eric Edmonds, Brett Freeman, Meli Mathis, Will Packard, Ken Swain, and Lena Wang.

Bleed red!

Lauren
