Annual PBC Work Day, Saturday, May 20th

Mark your calendars!

Let’s all come out and make quick work of spring cleaning around the house. Sweeping, washing, sorting, fixing, and all sorts of easy tasks for anyone and everyone.

Remember that volunteer work is a requirement of members. But it’s always a good time as well. See many other members that you maybe don’t see regularly.

More details as the date approaches.

See you there!

A note on crossing the river safely

Dear PBC’ers:

Please check for traffic moving upstream past PBC when you launch and return. Please be sure to yield to these other crews!

There is no need to cause crews from other boathouses concern for for their safety in your eagerness to get out to practice, or to return quickly to the dock when you are done for the day. Many of those other crews are inexperienced, so it’s difficult for them to hit the brakes to avoid a collision, and they should not have to do this. Our boats must yield right of way. Just as you do when driving your car – wait for an opening!

It is your duty – a duty for all of us, to yield to traffic in the pattern when crossing the river at any time, at any point of the river, not just in front of our house. We […]

Exclusive Potomac Boat Club Henley-style blazers

I am pleased to announce that a Raj Gulati, a Bangkok tailor well-beloved to the expat community, will be visiting Potomac Boat Club two weeks from Monday on May 1st from 7 – 10 p.m., and offering exclusive to Potomac Boat Club a specially-designed red-and-white PBC Henley-style blazer, custom-fit and ready for the English social season (or any PBC Social Committee function). The final design will be posted at the club next week. The cost of the blazer will be under $200. Blazers and all other orders should arrive 10-12 weeks from the fitting.

Will You Be Attending? We may need to manage capacity and blazer orders, so if you plan to come (or cannot make it but would still like to order a blazer) please fill out the 5-question survey here.

Donation: In exchange for this exclusive offer and the opportunity to support our PBC athletes in style, please consider […]

In case you missed it…

Dear fellow club members,

This past Sunday, April 9, 2017, we held our Annual Meeting where the afternoon started with an amazing spread coordinated by the Social Committee. Oysters, libations and girl scout cookies… oh my! We also had a wonderful christening of two new Club Committee singles and two new Race Committee hulls. This was followed by the traditional dock picture of attending members and guests.

Feeling giddy, we sauntered up to the ballroom and held our meeting to update and discuss all things Potomac Boat Club. We will have those minutes available within the next week or so (or until I can get them typed up) just in case you could not make the meeting and all its glory.

First, we would like to take a moment to again thank our three board members – Michael Silveus, Virginia Bryant and Linda Miller – who provided years of service to the […]

PBC Board Elections – April 9

As you may know, we have a 9-person Board that is the governing body of PBC.  Three board members are elected every year, each for a three-year term.

So why become a Board member?  If you have a belief that you can improve the Club, and have the time, energy and passion to devote, you should give it serious consideration.  This is your chance to really ‘Bleed Red’!  The Board is a collaborative body; one useful thing learned by sitting on a Board, particularly a non-profit Board of an all-volunteer organization, is the need for balance and understanding of different viewpoints. Our governing documents provide that only senior members in good standing (i.e., are current on all dues and fees payments), and who attend the Annual Meeting in person, may vote. No proxies are allowed – and one vote per membership.  So please do come to the Annual Meeting, exercise […]

Update: New Year, New Opportunities

Following up on Olwen’s post from a few days ago, regarding the results from the Mid-Atlantic Erg Sprints last weekend. First of all, congratulations to all of those who participated and have been getting faster by logging in their meters this winter.

As mentioned, Potomac Boat Club won the 2017 Team Award with a final score of 297 points. The main composition of these points are attributed to the following medals: 28 gold, 13 silver, and 5 bronze. That said, I would like to point out that everyone who competed contributed, since PBC has always had a tremendous presence at this event every year. I also wanted to briefly recognize Alexandria Community Rowing, who got second place with a score of 254 points. They proved once again to be great competitors, and definitely walked away with a decent collection of medals as well.

Doing our part, each person in the High Performance […]
