To prospective applicants:
Thank you for your inquiry about membership. Following is an application, which must be returned with a non-refundable application fee of $50. Upon receipt, you will be added to the mailing list. Due to the Club’s limited resources and an expanded interest in rowing, a substantial waiting list has developed. Currently one can expect notification of acceptance about four years from the date of your application. Accommodations may be made for new rowers wishing to participate in competitive programs to join the club's teams with competitive privileges while they wait for full membership. (For more on this, see four paragraphs below.)
Senior membership entitles one to full use of the Club facilities and equipment. However there is a five to six year waiting list for rack space for privately owned boats. Senior membership is open to those over 18 years old at the time of their selection. Junior membership is limited to high school and college undergraduates who participate in a supervised racing program. Guest membership is available only to members of other boat clubs who are temporarily in the Washington area. Guests must present a letter from their club president in addition to their application. Proper orientation and equipment certifications are prerequisites for rowing at the Club.
Annual dues are $600.00. Two quarters' dues ($300) plus a $250 initiation fee ($550 total) are due and payable upon notification of acceptance. Thereafter, the dues are billed semi-annually. The board of governors may order other fees and assessments from time to time. Future dues increases are to be anticipated.
The Club is a member-run organization. All members are expected to contribute regularly to management, maintenance, operation and repair of the facilities and equipment. This may include professional skills (law, accounting, management, etc.), trade skills (carpentry, plumbing, electrical, etc.), and rowing skills (coaching, orientation, boat repair, sculling certification, regatta management, etc.). Periodic member workdays are scheduled throughout the year.
Unfortunately, the Club is not able to permit the use of its facilities prior to one’s acceptance to membership. The one exception allows competitive oarspersons rowing in an official Club program under a coach’s supervision to use the Club. If you think you may qualify for this exception, please write the Club’s racing committee. Our liability insurance does not cover non-members' use of the Club. Under no circumstances may an applicant bring equipment into the Club prior to acceptance to membership or use the Club for any purpose, other than the "competitive" exception noted above.
It is important that you keep the membership committee advised of any changes of address and telephone while on the waiting list. If you have any questions or need more information, please contact Elizabeth Mygatt via the Club's membership e-mail address, membership@potomacboatclub.org.
Sincerely,
The Membership Committee
